I think it's also easier to say how you really feel, since there are some things that you'd be too embarrassed to say face-to-face, or if you're afraid of rejection, it's not as bad if you haven't met in real life yet.
A lot of people say there's a huge risk involved in chatting online, but I feel like any deception that's out there is the same kind of deception you'd face in real life. Unfortunately, there are some people who will take advantage of others no matter what.
I choose to believe that the risks of meeting someone online are about the same as if you meet them in person. Everyone has secrets that you might not know about at first, and if chatting gives you the chance to decide if you're comfortable with someone before meeting face-to-face, that's just a plus.
