In a sense the internet is like a big building, where sound goes at the speed of light for most of the time. If you are doing voice chat you still often do get an echo, it is just that it takes less than half a second for the sound to come back, even when travelling half way around the world, coming out of the speakers, and coming back via the other parties microphone, and then appearing in your own earphones. Sometimes it gives me a sense of comfort that at least I am being heard.
